2022 Kitchen Design Trends: Color, Style, and Technology

New kitchen design trends emerge in cabinet styles and technology features

White is on the out and bold colors with wooden features are in.

That’s one of the findings from the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s latest report for 2022. The annual report surveyed more than 700 industry professionals, including designers, architects, contractors, and showroom managers. Their findings provided a snapshot of the trends homeowners are incorporating into kitchens.

Kitchen design trend: Wood grain cabinets

The large number of millennials buying homes is influencing a shift to a more organic feel. White dominated kitchen design in recent years. Now, earthy tones that show off the natural grain of wood are the focus. Homeowners are opting for cabinets or benchtops in light-grain wood, which brings warmth to a design.

Kitchen colors for 2022

Renovators are blending brave color choices with the wood tones. And green and blue are topping the list of emerging kitchen colors. These colors are appearing on backsplashes, cabinets, and wall paint as well as artwork. 

Often brushed gold hardware is the accent of choice adding an even cozier feel to new kitchens. 

The kitchen designs in demand for the years to come will be organic and natural looks along with the clean lines and symmetry of contemporary design. Transitional style, a mix of traditional and contemporary design, will be another popular look.

Kitchen technology trends

As homeowners pull inspiration from nature in their kitchen’s appearance, they are utilizing technology in how their kitchen operates. A third of kitchen designs include elements like voice-controlled lighting or appliances operated through a phone or tablet app. 

A quarter of new kitchens feature touchless, motion sensor faucets. Our reliance on technology is also impacting kitchen design with our devices getting their own areas for charging and use.
